Body Acceptance

3 Steps to Move Towards Body Acceptance

After suffering from my own eating disorder as a child, I focused my social work efforts on those needing help in this same area. I truly understand what you're going through, because I've been there. Here are three simple steps you can take that will move you towards body acceptance.

1. Look at What You CAN Do

It's easy to focus on the negatives, and, in fact, our brains are wired to do so! Instead, I want you to try looking at all the amazing things your body is capable of. You might think your thighs are too big, but consider how their power helps you to walk, run, and climb stairs.

2. Make a List of Positives

Think about the things you like about yourself. And, this shouldn't be about your body. Consider adding things to your list like how you get good grades, how you help your parents or siblings, or that you're a safe driver. Again, focus on the positive things in life, and you'll start to see greater self love.

3. Cut Out Harmful People

Standing in front of a mirror with your friends and bashing your body isn't going to help you. If you must, cut those friends out of your life. Instead, spend more time with the people that love and support you just the way you are. It's easier to be positive about yourself when you're surrounded by other positive people.
